The Borisovo community of Moscow gathered for the first time for a prayer service

On May 27, on the Feast day of the Most Holy Trinity, a prayer service was held on the site of the former Most Holy Trinity Church in the south of Moscow, in the Borisovo area. Where the church once stood, today there is a park. The park’s management was understanding to the request from Christians and allowed them to gather here for a prayer.

The Holy Trinity prayer service was headed by Father Nikola Bobkov. For the prayer gathered more than 60 local residents – Old Believers, who, after lengthy church services in various communities of Moscow, nevertheless attended the service in Borisovo. After the prayer, the attendees were offered a meal. The people did not disperse for a long time and enjoyed sharing their impressions of the service in the Borisovo community.

The former village of Borisovo was one of the villages granted to boyar Boris Godunov after a successful military campaign against Kazi-Giray in 1591, resulting in the village’s name in honor of the new owner. After the church schism in the 17th century, a part of the residents remained faithful to the faith of their ancestors and tried to preserve church traditions and customs. From the beginning of the 18th century, it is known about the prayer houses in the territory of the village of Borisovo. After the decree on religious tolerance in 1905, the community was able to openly gather for prayer. In 1912, the Borisovo community was registered and by 1915 acquired a permanent church.

The church existed until 1936, when it was closed and the building was dismantled. In 1960, the village of Borisovo became part of Moscow. Soon, its gradual demolition began, until the mid-1980s. The territory of the village became part of several Moscow districts: Zyablikovo, Orekhovo-Borisovo Severnoye, Moskvorechye-Saburovo and Brateevo, – in which the Borisovites received apartments.

Currently, the faithful who attend services in the Old Believer churches in Moscow are forced to spend about an hour on travel time. In 2017, Borisovo’s Old Believer Orthodox community was registered in Moscow. His Grace, Metropolitan Korniliy, at the request of the believers, appealed to the Mayor of Moscow with a request to allocate a plot of land for the construction of a church. The faithful who gathered for the prayer service hope for a positive result of the matter and are ready to help in the reconstruction of the church.
