The priest’s sermon to newlyweds, from the rules of the Holy Fathers, on how Christians should live as husband and wife

Listen, spiritual children, let me tell you what the Christian secret is and how to live in the faith of Christ. Above all, have the fear of God in your hearts, learn from that and fear God.

The priest’s sermon to newlyweds, from the rules of the Holy Fathers, on how Christians should live as husband and wife

There is a commandment of God – You shall love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the great and first commandment, and similar to it is the second commandment – You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Who is our neighbor? This is every Christian living in the faith of Christ. Also, be meek and humble. The Lord says: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth”

For meekness is the mother of wisdom and intelligence, and of all good works. Also, dear newlyweds, keep mental and physical cleanliness – the husband from the wife and the wife from the husband do not separate.

As like in the old days, where husbands and wives lived purely and uprightly to please God and to righteously settle into heaven, so you, too, should live lawfully.

Honor Wednesday and Friday – these are two angels of the Lord. Keep Sunday particularly holy; do not have physical spousal relations and save yourselves from sins. Also keep holy the feast-days. Come to the church of God and pray diligently on those days.

Also, spiritual children, be merciful, just as your Father in heaven is merciful. Give alms from your righteous works and give alms with love and as much as you can. If you are prosperous, then give more, and if you are poor, then give according to your ability. And every Christian is instructed to give one-tenth of his earnings to God.

Visit your spiritual father often, consult with him to teach you to do all the good things that Christians should do and have unfailing love and faith for him.

And you, brother, love your wife, teach more often and do not be angry with her. And if your wife starts to disobey, discipline lightly and do not teach with anger.

You, sister, respect your husband and honor him in all regards. And consult with him in everything, for he is your head. Like the cross on the Church, this is how the husband is the head of the wife. Like as the Church obeys Christ, it is fitting for you as a wife to obey your husband, not to rebuke him, but to submit! God gives honor and glory for obedience, but for disobedience – bitter torments. May it not be for you, wife, a burden to be obedient to your husband. Be mild-mannered and humble, gentle and cheerful. This is the teachings from the words of the Lord.

If you fulfil these teachings, then the mercy of God will be upon you from now and unto the ages, and you will have many years on earth, and you will be glorified in God’s Heaven, and will be part of His Kingdom in Heaven.

Try, children, to keep the commandments of God.

If you do not fulfil the commandments of God, then I will not be guilty of this before God; and you shall receive for your works on the Day of Judgment.

To our God be glory, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen!
