Metropolitan Korniliy became the laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation for outstanding achievements in the field of humanitarian activities in 2021.

Metropolitan Korniliy became a laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation for humanitarian activities Vladimir Tolstoy, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation on Cultural Issues, called the award “recognition of the merits of Metropolitan Cornelius in the humanization of our society,” recalling that in 2021 the metropolitan initiated a number of events to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Archpriest Avvakum.

“In 2020-2021, on the initiative of Metropolitan Cornelius, supported by the President of the Russian Federation, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Archpriest Avvakum as a famous spiritual writer, one of the founders of a new Russian literature for his time, was organized. Thematic exhibitions were held in a number of regions of Russia, monuments to Archpriest Avvakum were inaugurated in Moscow on the territory of the Rogozhskaya Sloboda, in Borovsk, Kaluga region, in Naryan-Mar and Belgorod. An International Old Believers’ Forum was held in Moscow.

During numerous educational and humanitarian events of the celebration, an objective analysis of the complexity and inconsistency of Russian religious history was presented, the richness of Russian spiritual culture was shown, the importance of preserving traditional moral values and the need to consolidate the entire modern society on their basis were clearly outlined.”

“This attention is not so much to me as to the entire Old Believer Church,” was how Vladyka Cornelius perceived the news of the award.

The Metropolitan noted that he would like to direct the award received to the construction of churches, the development of educational and publishing activities.

The names of the laureates and the decree dated June 9, 2022 No. 348 on awarding Metropolitan Cornelius were announced at a special briefing by Presidential Adviser Vladimir Tolstoy, Chairman of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights, Presidential Adviser Valery Fadeev and Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy.

Three more prizes will be awarded in the field of science and technology. Three public figures were awarded prizes in the field of literature and art.
